ADVANCE ORGANIZER IN TEACHING

Advance organizer is the method of teaching by connecting prior lesson to the lesson that teachers want to teach. It is the general overview about the lesson that students needs to acquire. It just not make easier for students to recall the past lesson, but it also can shows the connection between the knowledges and see how they elaborates. It can be in the form of words or graphic or both. It is very useful for teachers to give the general picture of the lesson where students are able to understand it because it will not be filled by long sentences and scientific words. There are two type of advance organizer which are expository and comparative. Expository is for the new knowledge that students will explore and comparative is for the new knowledge that connected with student’s prior knowledge. The very common advance organizer that widely used in school is mind map. Teachers also can use ICT to make the advance organizer more interesting and effective.
One of the examples where this advance organizer can be use is in chemistry for alcohol in carbon compounds. Teachers can use mind map and elaborate it by giving the meaning of alcohol, the general structure alcohol, the misuse and abuse of alcohol and the process of gaining alcohol from the prior lesson of other hydrocarbon compounds which are alkene. For the meaning it can be in the words form. For the general structure teachers can use in the form of graphic. If possible, teachers can upload a 3D graphic of alcohol molecule structure to show to the students. For the misuse and abuse of alcohol maybe teachers can mix both words and graphic form. Maybe teachers can upload a video about it for students to see the clear both positive and negative effect of alcohol. Same thing goes to the process of changing alkene to alcohol. From this mind map, I do believe it can make the learning & teaching process be more smooth as teachers can generate the topic to make students see clearly.
Here is the link to the video where this advance organizer have been used. Let's practice it in our classroom lesson!
